The Carolina Panthers didn’t acquire a safety during the 2021 NFL Draft, but Bobby McCain’s release should make them sit up and take notice.

One of the more surprising things that emerged from the 2021 NFL Draft where the Carolina Panthers are concerned is that they didn’t come away from the three-day event with another safety. Depth looks especially thin behind the starting duo of Juston Burris and Jeremy Chinn following the team’s decision to release Tre Boston, and there is no guarantee last year’s free-agent arrival from the Cleveland Browns is going to make a better go of things on the final year of his deal.

If things continue to trend on a downward curve for Burris, then it could have some severe ramifications and a weak link for a defense that looks set to make some real noise in 2021. However, one veteran who recently became available should make the Panthers think twice about bringing another player at the position on board.

The Miami Dolphins made the surprising move to cut ties with team captain and starting safety Bobby McCain on Thursday. This came as a direct result of their decision to allocate a second-round pick on Oregon’s stud defensive back Jevon Holland, meaning the veteran was surplus to requirements and subsequently moved on.

This seems like a no-brainer for Carolina, although there should be more than a few potential suitors looking in McCain’s direction. Here are three reasons why the Panthers should be calling him at the earliest possible opportunity.
