Carolina Panthers at Indianapolis Colts

First up for the Carolina Panthers is a trip to the Indianapolis Colts, who could have some lofty expectations in 2021 if their new quarterback makes his presence felt in a different environment.

This is a similar situation the Panthers have with Sam Darnold. The Colts traded for Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles after a torrid 2020 campaign that saw him benched for rookie Jalen Hurts, taking on a substantial amount of financial implications as a result.

It’s a make-or-break year for Wentz, who will be working behind an elite offensive line for the first time, has a strong running game to call upon, and some dynamic weapons in the passing game to further assist his transition.

Couple this with a ferocious defense and it’s hard to envisage a situation where Wentz fails. But there is just no telling what his dismal final season in Philadelphia has done to the player’s confidence.

Wentz and Darnold should get plenty of reps in the preseason opener before winding down over the next fortnight. It’s a great opportunity for them to get in a rhythm and improve timing with their new teammates without the pressure of gaining a positive result thrown in for good measure.

If Wentz shows enough with the Colts then a potential playoff push won’t be far behind. As for Carolina, they might also fancy their chances if Darnold proves he was a victim of circumstance with the New York Jets.
