3 reasons the Panthers could surpass preseason expectations in 2021

The Sam Darnold factor
Trading for a Sam Darnold was a gamble by the Carolina Panthers, of that there is little doubt.
But if the quarterback finally starts living up to his potential, it’s going to make a substantial difference.
Darnold might not have been Carolina’s first-choice trade target this offseason, but that does not detract from what an intriguing player he is. The former USC star has a cannon for an arm, good mobility, and strong leadership skills, but he was hung out to dry over his three years on the New York Jets that eventually resulted in his early departure.
Just what this has done to his confidence is unclear. There is also the matter of Darnold’s poor decision-making even when he had a clean pocket to consider.
However, if Darnold can start putting things together quickly with more talent and better coaching at his disposal, then a potential playoff spot won’t be far behind.
The stakes are high for Darnold next season.
Failing to make the most out of this latest opportunity would almost certainly see an end to his chances of being a capable NFL starter moving forward.
Carolina is sacrificing a mere second-round pick in 2022 after their trades before and during the draft for Darnold, so even though they picked up his fifth-year option, it won’t stop them from going in a different direction if things don’t pan out as expected.
If it all works out, then the Panthers and Darnold will be a force to be reckoned with.
