Untapped potential

Jamie Newman might be a little rough around the edges in terms of development, but the physical attributes are there for all to see.

There is some serious work to do regarding accuracy and decision-making if the signal-caller wants to forge a successful career in the NFL. But the Carolina Panthers aren’t going to expect Newman to be a plug-and-play starter capable of making a difference anytime soon.

In terms of mobility, arm strength, and ability to make things happen on the fly, Newman has a lot going for him. He is a terrific athlete that has no trouble getting out on the move if a play isn’t developing as expected, which could see him used in wildcat sets should the opportunity arise somewhere.

Had Newman played his final season at Georgia after transferring from Wake Forest in 2020, there is a high likelihood he’d be further along by now and would have undoubtedly heard his name called during the draft.

The signal-caller cannot be criticized for opting out and putting his health before anything else, even though it has complicated Newman’s chances of getting a place to call his own after the Philadelphia Eagles cut his time with the franchise short.

This comes with almost no risk where the Panthers are concerned. Acquiring Newman off the waiver wire might be worth its weight in gold.
