Matt Rhule is well-known for going back to his former college players since joining the Carolina Panthers on a seven-year, $60 million deal from Baylor. This has come with some success and plenty of disappointments, so it remains to be seen which category Sean Chandler falls into when it’s all said and done.

Chandler spent the first three years of his NFL career with the New York Giants. But his role diminished significantly in 2020 and it came as no surprise to see the organization parts ways with the safety in free agency.

The veteran will now get a chance to prove his worth to the Panthers. There does appear to be an opportunity for Chandler considering the lack of depth on the backend outside of stud Jeremy Chinn and the experienced Juston Burris.

Whether Chandler can make the most out of scheme familiarity and hit the ground running at training camp remains to be seen. The Panthers are keen for there to be as much competition as possible before they get their season underway, so there is even the prospect of another potential free agent coming into the fold before a pivotal few weeks at Spartanburg.

Things need to go in Chandler’s favor early and often. He will also need to make sure he makes every preseason rep count to push his way into Carolina’s plans in 2021.
