Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals parted ways with long-term veteran Geno Atkins this offseason, which wasn’t a big surprise considering the youth movement currently being undertaken on their roster. This has left them a little threadbare on the defensive line interior, although the addition of Larry Ogunjobi should help if he can make the sort of impact expected.

It remains to be seen whether D.J. Reader will be trusted with more playing time in 2021. But the Bengals need a better contingency plan if things don’t work out with their projected starting duo.

Kawann Short would give them an experienced presence to call upon in the immediate aftermath of Atkins’ departure. This would only be a short-term fix, but considering the player’s lack of involvement over the last two seasons, there could be plenty left in the tank with no further complications.

Any team looking to acquire Short would probably want a good look at him during training camp. He is undoubtedly respected enough within league circles to get this sort of opportunity. But what comes after that will be ultimately down to the player.

The Bengals need all the help they can get in the ultra-competitive AFC North. There might be a chance for further progression if Joe Burrow returns under center at full strength, but this division now has three potential playoff challengers who will take no prisoners next season.
