Matt Rhule stated Troy Pride Jr. might not be ready to go for training camp with an undisclosed injury. This would be nothing short of a disaster for the cornerback heading into Year 2 of his professional career.

The former Notre Dame speedster found it hard adjusting to the rigors of the next level. This is not uncommon for elite rookie cornerbacks never mind ones that are considered development projects.

Pride Jr. was exposed in coverage on multiple occasions and it was clear from early on that he wasn’t ready to see the field for an extended period of time.

The Carolina Panthers didn’t have much of a choice other than to throw Pride Jr. in at the deep end. But they now know just how much work there is to do.

Not only this, but the Panthers also acquired A.J. Bouye in free agency as well as drafting Jaycee Horn and Keith Taylor Jr., which could demote Pride Jr. further down the pecking order.

If he doesn’t show some serious growth this offseason, Pride Jr. may be one of the surprise cuts Carolina makes when choosing their 53-man roster.

This might be harsh after just one season in difficult circumstances, but the NFL waits for no man. Releasing Pride Jr. would save the Panthers $780,000 and it’s a distinct possibility the player should take seriously.
