3 realistic goals for Panthers rookie WR Shi Smith in 2021
By Nick Halden
Shi Smith will have a rushing touchdown for the Carolina Panthers in 2021
South Carolina loved to get Shi Smith’s hands on the football any way they could when they were in need of a big play.
Smith was used on jets sweeps more than once in his time with the Gamecocks. He is comfortable taking handoffs and I believe he will get more than one with the Carolina Panthers in 2021.
With Robby Anderson, Christian McCaffrey, and Smith, the Panthers have a lot of speed at their disposal this season. We are going to see a lot of confusing run schemes that could assist new quarterback Sam Darnold and the suspect offensive line.
I am betting these will include the rookie.
Despite his struggles running the ball in college, Smith was a useful decoy and has the speed to get loose.
Scoring a touchdown on the ground this season is a bit of a bold prediction. One I truly believe will happen considering Smith’s speed and the talent around him.
Smith’s primary value is going to be on gadget plays and using him out of the slot.
A good example of a similar player would be Ted Ginn Jr., a wide receiver who has made a living consistently because of his speed and big playmaking ability. While he lacks the skills to be a true number one or two option, he has been an impact player and helped a lot of teams in his career.
Smith has that same ability.
