5 Carolina Panthers backups who aren’t getting talked about enough
By Dean Jones
Frankie Luvu – Carolina Panthers LB
The lack of depth at linebacker is noticeable despite the Carolina Panthers bringing in some quality this offseason. Denzel Perryman is the obvious upgrade on the interior if his production with the Los Angeles Chargers is any indication, but another under-the-radar signing also has the scope to shine.
Frankie Luvu joined in free agency from the New York Jets and it’s hard not to love the way he goes about his business on the field.
His controlled aggression and enthusiasm on almost every down are there for all to see. If he can work on his positioning, the Panthers might just have a player on their hands.
The former Washington State standout has six sacks over three years. Not bad for someone who played a limited role with the Jets and something that Carolina lacked from their outside linebackers in 2020.
Phil Snow has an embarrassment of riches on his front seven this time around. Luvu should make the roster providing he shows enough during preseason games and could end up becoming a valuable piece of the puzzle as the campaign progresses.
If the signing of Luvu comes off, it will be another masterstroke by the front office, which worked wonders with the limited resources available to them in the current financial climate this spring.
