What are the big problems that the Carolina Panthers must solve during training camp in 2021?

This is arguably the biggest training camp in recent memory for the Carolina Panthers. If last season’s uncertainty with an inexperienced roster and coaching staff left some leeway in terms of performances, much more is expected this time around with more structure and plenty of notable playmakers on both sides of the football.

A welcome return to Wofford College in Spartanburg will be beneficial, or at least that’s what head coach Matt Rhule is hoping. Couple this with three preseason games before competitive action begins and the Panthers have plenty of time to solve potential riddles that remain a concern.

At least from the outside looking in, there is much work to be done for a coaching staff that is working with more in the way of talent in 2021. This is thanks in no small part to really strong recruitment over the last two years, meaning there aren’t many more excuses Carolina can use if they fail to deliver on their promise.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at five big problems the Panthers need to solve during training camp in 2021.

Can the Carolina Panthers rely on Joey Slye?

With no other kicker on the roster, one suspects the Panthers are comfortable moving forward with Joey Slye as their option in 2021, at least initially. Whether he can hold onto the job long-term is still up for debate.

Slye was inconsistent last season and it was something of a surprise to see Carolina give him an extension so soon after the 2020 campaign came to a conclusion. The team has hinted at bringing in someone else for additional competition, but this hasn’t materialized as yet.

If Slye has a rocky preseason and doesn’t show enough during camp, then it might force the Panthers into a pretty drastic measure if those in power don’t like what they see.
