Carolina Panthers players and coaches react to Taylor Moton’s deal
By Dean Jones
Plenty of Carolina Panthers players took to social media after stud right tackle Taylor Moton signed a huge four-year deal with the organization.
Just when it seemed as if Taylor Moton would be playing out the 2021 season on the franchise tag, the Carolina Panthers pulled another rabbit out of the hat just a few short hours before the franchise tag deadline for players across the league.
Moton signed a four-year, $72 million deal that also comes with $43 million guaranteed. This will begin in 2022 once his $13.75 million franchise tag officially runs out.
Few would argue the former second-round pick isn’t worthy of such a commitment considering how consistent he’s been over the last three years and his ability to remain healthy in the process.
This news was met by widespread praise from the team’s fanbase on social media. They’ve seen some prominent roster members leave the organization in recent years and had Moton entering the campaign on the tag, it would have led to some ongoing speculation until the matter became resolved.
Thankfully, the Panthers got this done just in time.
Moton can now focus on football and Carolina turn their attention to figuring out the other remaining places on the protection. Something that needs to be solved at the earliest possible opportunity.
Carolina Panthers players delighted Taylor Moton has signed long-term.
It’s clear that Moton’s teammates are thrilled he’ll be sticking around for the foreseeable future. Many players and coaches issued their delight on various social media platforms to give their seal of approval on another smart move by general manager Scott Fitterer and the front office.
Another who came out in support of Moton was Christian McCaffrey. The running back will benefit significantly from having the Western Michigan product plowing the road from the right-hand side, something the All-Pro will take full advantage of in 2021 and beyond.
McCaffrey posted on Instagram how happy he was to “continue to share this journey” with Moton, adding that his contract was “well-deserved”.
And he’s not wrong.
At a time when quality protection is at a premium in Carolina, putting some financial security Moton’s way was a no-brainer. If some intriguing incoming college recruits step up and perform above expectations quickly, then the Panthers might be in line for some serious progression next season.
Moton will lead the charge and is tasked with maintaining his exceptionally high standard – something that’s expected of a right tackle that is now among the league’s highest-paid at the position.
The Panthers wouldn’t have paid much less if this had been sorted last year. Moton is a player that knows his worth and the main thing from the team’s point of view is that things didn’t become more complicated before free agency in 2022.
Moton’s new deal is further proof Carolina is heading in the right direction. Hopefully, the player can continue to shine in the coming years and cement his status as one of the most prolific edge protectors in the business.
