If the Carolina Panthers want to bring in a quarterback for training camp with a little more experience, then someone like Matt Barkley would enter the discussion. Another highly-touted prospect coming out of USC who never truly reached the level expected.

Barkley has managed to stay in the league without quite ever becoming a productive starter. He spent the last two seasons backing up Josh Allen on the Buffalo Bills and is still looking for a new home after they decided not to extend the veteran this offseason.

There wouldn’t be anything like pressure on Barkley to make the roster considering the Panthers also have Sam Darnold, Will Grier, and P.J. Walker. However, if the team is looking for another distributor under center that can step in during team drills and scrimmages, then it might just be worth putting a call in his direction.

One potential obstacle is Barkley’s potential for growth. He’s on the wrong side of 30 years old now, so the chances of him making any drastic improvements appear slim at best.

That being said, the Panthers aren’t looking for anyone to come in and be Patrick Mahomes. If Barkley can distribute the football efficiently in the pressure-cooker that is Wofford College in Spartanburg, the signal-caller will have done his job.
