Carolina Panthers trade package No. 2

Before the Carolina Panthers eventually decided on trading for Sam Darnold, it was reported that senior figures within the organization took one final look at Deshaun Watson’s situation before pulling the trigger.

They’ll need a concise update regarding legal matters, obviously. But team owner David Tepper appeared adamant the Panthers should risk it all to get their hands on Watson.

Darnold is heading into a make-or-break season with his starting chances on the line. Being traded for a second time would be a bitter blow to his progress and especially after the Panthers placed a significant amount of confidence in his ability to make a better go of things in a different environment.

But if it comes down to a choice between the two, it’s no contest from a playing standpoint.

Adding in someone like Donte Jackson is something else that might get the Houston Texans thinking. The cornerback looked like a shutdown player in the making at the backend of 2020 and there’s a real chance his best football is still to come in a contract year.

Darnold, Jackson, three first-round picks, and a 2023 second-rounder is a pretty monumental trade package for Watson. One that Houston would think long and hard about if this scenario ever came to fruition.
