What are some important things to keep a close eye on during Carolina Panthers training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg?

Carolina Panthers training camp is always one of the most exciting times of the year. Something that fans were deprived of in 2020 as COVID-19 health concerns resulted in some significant disruption to what was previously classed as normal preparations for the upcoming campaign.

Returning to Wofford College is the latest sign that things are improving to a certain extent. Panthers’ training camp should be fun to watch in the stifling heat, with the team also boasting one of the league’s highest vaccination rates to ensure complications are kept to a minimum.

Matt Rhule and his staff have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. It’s been an outstanding period of recruitment this offseason, but that will count for nothing if things don’t come together quickly on the field ahead of Week 1.

On the eve of Panthers training camp, here are five big things to keep an eye on in Spartanburg.

Special teams progress

One thing to keep constantly monitoring at Panthers training camp is just things on special teams are developing. This is a part of the game that often gets overlooked, but could play a leading role in whatever success comes Carolina’s way.

Joey Slye’s performance is a pivotal part of this. The kicker went through some problems in 2020 and there won’t be the freedom for as many mistakes this time around if the player wants to keep his job.

It’ll be interesting to see how punter Joseph Charlton gets on in his second season. The Panthers also have plenty of options in the kick return game after deciding not to bring back Pharoh Cooper in free agency.

There are many components behind a solid special teams’ contribution. So it’s important the Panthers get this particular area of the field right at camp.
