5 early observations from first Panthers training camp practice

Baby steps for Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold
A lot has been written about the stakes surrounding Sam Darnold‘s trade to the Carolina Panthers. At just 24-years-old, the quarterback is heading into the fourth season of a career that’s had far more misses than hits so far, although there are plenty of reasons to be encouraged now the No. 3 overall selection in 2018 is finally out of the New York Jets.
Darnold made a good start to life on the Panthers at voluntary OTAs and mandatory minicamp. What comes next over the next few weeks at training camp is far more important.
The first day of practice was probably a nervous one for Darnold. He’ll be scrutinized more than any player and it’s absolutely essential he makes a solid impression before competitive action begins.
One of the big factors Darnold’s been working on during the offseason is his footwork. This is something that really came across on Day 1 of practice, which will hopefully transition well to game day when the time comes.
The coaching staff was notably focused on Darnold’s short movements for a large part of the practice. He also made some nice throws in 7-on-7 drills, according to multiple reports, so things could have been far worse.
