4 early Sam Darnold observations from Panthers training camp

Footwork is key for Sam Darnold
One big part of Sam Darnold’s game that has been focused on heavily during the offseason is footwork. Although his protection on the New York Jets was nothing short of pathetic for the most part, the quarterback still needs to adjust better in the pocket when pressure inevitably comes.
Considering the Carolina Panthers’ offensive line questions heading into the campaign, Darnold could be in for a rough ride at times in 2021. It’s therefore important for the signal-caller to make the necessary adjustments – and quickly – under center to make the most out of some outstanding weapons at his disposal.
Darnold has all the intangibles needed to make a real go of things. Becoming a little more mobile would give his chances of finally proving he is a starting-caliber quarterback a huge shot in the arm.
Quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan has worked wonders with the likes of Deshaun Watson and Matthew Stafford in the past and believes Darnold can be a productive player with a little more refinement.
"“Sometimes people miss, in my opinion, subtle movements, in the pocket movements. To me, less moving parts equals more accuracy. So I think it’s a subtle movement up in the pocket, or to the side in the pocket, but I’m still in a great throwing position. And we’ve done a lot of that this offseason.”"
This is something that’s been prevalent throughout the first few days of Panthers training camp. Hopefully, a solid opening to practices will stand Darnold in good stead when competitive action gets underway.
