Is Will Grier already an afterthought?

Will Grier‘s time with the Carolina Panthers has been relatively underwhelming so far. The former third-round pick was not ready to see the field as a rookie and paid the price when Ron Rivera threw him in at the deep end for two starts that left a lot to be desired.

Last season saw Grier inactive more often than not as the new regime went with P.J. Walker instead. This leaves the signal-caller facing a critical training camp as he looks to start proving some doubters wrong from a performance standpoint.

Grier is going to benefit more than most from preseason games, which will be the first time he’s seen any on-field action since 2019. His production will be under the microscope and no doubt compared with Walker’s, so there is a lot riding on the coming weeks for the West Virginia product.

Carolina drafting Grier was a strange move at the time.

If things don’t go according to plan for the player before Week 1, then his prospects with the organization will become even more of an afterthought moving forward.

Perhaps a fresh start is the best thing for all parties involved.

Grier might even have some slight trade value if he shows out in warmup games for any teams looking for a signal-caller with slightly more upside than what’s currently sitting on the free-agent market.
