Carolina Panthers ‘keeping an eye’ on Deshaun Watson

There are many hurdles to overcome before Deshaun Watson gets his wish. The former Clemson star is undeniably talented, but these off-the-field issues have tainted his otherwise solid reputation both on the field, within the locker room, and throughout the community.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, a league source stated that the Carolina Panthers are keeping an eye on developments. They are tied to Sam Darnold 2023 after picking up his fifth-year option, but nothing is set in stone after that in regards to his future.

"“Yes, they traded for Sam Darnold and picked up his 2022 option. Owner David Tepper nevertheless is committed to finding a long-term franchise quarterback. Watson has the skill to become that guy, and Tepper — who made his money buying low and selling high — could be inclined to make a move if Watson’s contract can be secured at a reasonable amount.”"

This would be a huge risk at the present time.

Carolina can ill-afford to give up some substantial compensation for a signal-caller with so many questions surrounding his future. But they are no doubt keeping tabs in the event his scenario comes to a successful conclusion.

The Panthers took one last look at Watson before pulling the trigger on Darnold, according to Joseph Person of The Athletic. Carolina might also be in a good position to get the NFL’s passing leader in 2020 for a good price considering the Texans have already played their hand, per Florio.

"“By all appearances, the Texans are ready to move on from Watson. That attitude necessarily makes it much harder to get a huge return, especially with the pending legal problems.”"
