P.J. Walker winning Carolina Panthers QB2 battle

Although it probably won’t be decided until after the preseason, P.J. Walker seems to be the clear frontrunner to become Sam Darnold’s primary backup in 2021. This is a role he occupied for Teddy Bridgewater last season, even winning one game as a starter against the Detroit Lions after a superb showing.

The former XFL MVP candidate has demonstrated some accomplished throwing in recent days at training camp. Walker now has full command of Joe Brady’s system and also offers a different skill set thanks to his mobility and ability to make plays on the run.

There is no disputing the fact Darnold is the No. 1 guy for the Carolina Panthers next season. However, Walker can still carve out an important role for himself and potentially earn a new deal beyond this year in the process.

Will Grier won’t go down without a fight. Make no mistake about that.

But judging by how both have performed during camp so far, the job is Walker’s to lose.

Getting a good look at both in warmup games will tell Matt Rhule and his staff more about how both are progressing. This battle also got a little more intense when the head coach stated that the Panthers might only take two quarterbacks onto their roster initially.

Walker has done his chances of being No. 2 the world of good. But all hope is not lost for Grier just yet if he stands out under center before the final cuts are made.
