The Carolina Panthers roster is filling out and with it, one area of need is becoming increasingly obvious – a better backup plan for quarterback Sam Darnold.

P.J. Walker and Will Grier currently sit second and third respectively on the Carolina Panthers depth chart. Neither player are capable of stepping in and starting if Sam Darnold is injured or struggles this season.

Walker is a good third option but not someone you want stepping in to stabilize what would be a rocky situation if Darnold were to miss a start or be benched this season.

Grier is still simply a project quarterback who isn’t capable of starting currently. Neither player is an ideal option to head into the season if the worst happens to Darnold at any stage.

Thankfully for the Panthers, there are plenty of trade options and players likely to be cut as the season nears.

Carolina Panthers season would be done if Sam Darnold got injured.

Acquiring a quality option to sit behind Darnold should be a priority for the Panthers considering Walker and Grier are currently their only options.

While no one wants to plan for injury or failure, it is the team’s job to make a contingency for every variable. Right now if Darnold gets hurt or fails to live up to expectations, there isn’t anyone on this roster who will keep the Panthers competitive or even mildly interesting.

This may seem harsh, but Carolina has seen enough from both players to know this is the case and they should be preparing to make a move soon.

Here are five of the best options Carolina could acquire for very little in the trade market if they went down this route.
