Rashaan Melvin – Carolina Panthers CB

With A.J. Bouye sidelined through injury, an opportunity could be knocking for another cornerback on the depth chart in the coming weeks. The Pro Bowler will miss the first two games of the season anyway, so this is the perfect chance for the Carolina Panthers to see who is worthy of slotting in alongside Donte Jackson and Jaycee Horn when the real action begins.

There remains some intrigue about Keith Taylor Jr.’s capabilities. Much will also depend on the progress made by Troy Pride Jr. and Stantley Thomas-Oliver III this offseason.

However, another name to keep a close eye on is Rashaan Melvin.

The defensive back will be going against his old team at the Indianapolis Colts and is looking to get his career back on track. Melvin opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 health concerns and was subsequently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars when a new regime led by Urban Meyer came into the fold.

Melvin has the size and athleticism needed to cover well from the slot, which is where the Panthers need help until Bouye is ready to return.

While the younger players could have more upside, the experience Melvin brings to the table is useful considering Horn is also embarking on his first season in a professional environment.
