Carolina Panthers rookie report from first preseason game at Colts
By Miles Ruder
Chuba Hubbard – Carolina Panthers RB
Chuba Hubbard struggled to get anything going early on against the Colts, beginning his day with five carries for a measly six yards. This isn’t necessarily a knock on him as the offensive line wasn’t creating many holes to run through in the early going.
His next carry, however, ultimately defined his day.
Hubbard ran into a brick wall at the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 1 but found a gap on the right side and bolted his way down the field for a 59-yard run. Later in the drive, the Oklahoma State star scored for the moment on a two-point conversion attempt but it was called back after a holding call on Tremble.
Hubbard’s final carry of the day went for 15 yards to cap off his 80-yard rushing performance.
The only disappointing part of Hubbard’s game was dropping two passes, one of which could’ve resulted in a closer field goal attempt for Joey Slye right before half-time, which he ultimately missed.
While Hubbard is mostly competing for a backup role behind Christian McCaffrey, it was refreshing to see another running back break off for long runs, albeit in the preseason.
If he can put up similar numbers in the final two preseason games, Hubbard will have a strong case to move ahead of Reggie Bonnafon on the Panthers depth chart.
