5 Panthers players tumbling down depth chart during the preseason

Myles Hartsfield – Carolina Panthers S
There was a lot to like about the way Myles Hartsfield acclimatized to life in the NFL after going undrafted in 2020. The versatile defender made the roster and gained meaningful reps in a competitive setting, which was probably more than the Carolina Panthers originally hoped when they brought the player on board.
Hartsfield had a key rotational spot in his sights this offseason. And might still achieve this objective when push comes to shove.
However, it’s hard to ignore the emergence of other safeties alongside Hartsfield on the depth chart this offseason.
The likes of Sam Franklin, Sean Chandler, and Kenny Robinson have all caught the eye. Late arrival Doug Middleton has also shown flashes to further increase the competition for places.
This could leave Hartsfield facing an uncertain future when it’s time for Carolina to formally decide on their 53-man roster. A little harsh considering his encouraging development over the last two years, but there is no room for any sentiment when it comes to forming a squad capable of challenging.
Only time will tell, obviously.
And perhaps the coaching staff is seeing things differently.
But Hartsfield could be further down the pecking order than originally anticipated at this juncture.
