5 key observations from second Carolina Panthers practice in Charlotte
By Dean Jones
Another impressive day for Shi Smith
The strides being made by Shi Smith throughout the preparation period cannot be ignored. A sixth-round selection out of South Carolina, the wide receiver has grown in stature with every passing practice and made another tremendous contribution with highlight plays on Tuesday.
There appears to be some significant momentum building where Smith is concerned.
He’s drawn rave reviews from players, coaches, and media alike. Something that should serve him well next season.
Smith is a lock to make the roster. His production at camp is matched by two outstanding performances in preseason games, which only strengthens the player’s claims for a solid number of targets in his first season with the Carolina Panthers.
Asking Smith to do too much at this stage of his development might do more harm than good. But the player has the sort of mentality that demands respect and is sure to take on every challenge coming his way.
The Panthers have an embarrassment of riches at the wide receiver position. However, if Smith continues this trend moving forward, he might be a surprise most teams don’t see coming in 2021.
This could be a draft steal for Carolina when it’s all said and done. Another substantial find from Scott Fitterer – a man renowned for unearthing gems in the later rounds.
