5 Panthers roster hopefuls who could get cut for waiver wire pickups
By Dean Jones
P.J. Walker – Carolina Panthers QB
The battle to be Sam Darnold’s backup in 2021 has gone back and forth this offseason. Both P.J. Walker and Will Grier are fighting it out for second on the depth chart, with the signal-callers showing flashes of what they are capable of in the preseason.
This is something that’s gone down to the wire. One could argue that Grier outperformed Walker in the preseason finale, but the former XFL MVP candidate has a close relationship with Matt Rhule from their time together at Temple and also possesses some on-field success in a competitive environment.
Considering the increasing concerns surrounding the Delta variant and how it might impact the season, keeping three quarterbacks on the roster seems like the smart move.
However, Rhule stated in his media availability on Saturday that the Panthers were still thinking of taking just two quarterbacks onto the roster if they feel another body is needed elsewhere.
Walker and Grier have their faults.
And it’s a difficult call to make as to just who is better at this juncture.
Even if the Panthers announce both on the 53-man roster, one might make way if a player of interest was brought to their attention on the waiver wire.
This situation could easily come true for Grier, too. But he left the biggest impression in the last warmup game and has a similar skill set to Darnold from a scheme standpoint.
