Rashaan Melvin – Carolina Panthers CB

The Carolina Panthers picked up a cornerback off the waiver wire last year when they signed Rasul Douglas, who ended up being a starter for the large majority of the campaign and held his own despite some obvious struggles.

This positional group looks stronger in 2021, led by Donte Jackson and No. 8 overall selection Jaycee Horn.

A.J. Bouye is also expected to make a contribution from the slot once he returns from a two-game suspension carrying over from his time on the Denver Broncos in 2020. But his lack of reps throughout training camp might lead to some complications unless others on the depth chart stand up and are counted.

Rashaan Melvin, Stantley Thomas-Oliver III, and rookie Keith Taylor Jr. will likely attain roster positions initially. But there are more than a few questions regarding their ability to produce the goods when it matters most.

It might be worth the Panthers looking at somebody who could perhaps come in and strengthen their options. Especially if Bouye takes time to find his feet after so long away from the gridiron.

This might leave Melvin on the outside looking in despite impressing throughout camp after opting out of the 2020 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars due to COVID-19 health concerns.

It would a bit harsh on any player. But there is no room for sentiment when it comes to building a competitive roster.
