A.J. Bouye – Carolina Panthers CB

It doesn’t appear as if A.J. Bouye’s status as the nickel cornerback is in much doubt during the 2021 season. But it’s not been the easiest preparation period for the former Pro Bowler following his free-agent move from the Denver Broncos.

Bouye caught the eye during the early portion of training camp at Wofford College. However, a muscle injury kept him out for a lengthy period of time and compromised the coaching staff’s desire to get some meaningful reps into the player before the regular season.

This might not sound like much of a problem – especially to someone who’s been around as long as Bouye – but there is also the small matter of the veteran missing the first two games of the campaign due to suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy during his time with the Broncos.

Not exactly the ideal scenario for Bouye, who is looking to put an inconsistent campaign in 2020 behind him and return to the form that saw the player regarded as one of the best corners around on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The last thing Carolina needs is for Bouye to take time getting back up to game speed. So not having the chance to work during the preseason was a big blow and his progress will be something to monitor once he’s permitted to return.
