5 Carolina Panthers players who could surprise vs. NY Jets in Week 1
By Dean Jones
Ian Thomas – Carolina Panthers TE
It might be surprising to some that Ian Thomas is still on the Carolina Panthers. He blew a huge opportunity to become Greg Olsen’s long-term successor in 2020, becoming a relative afterthought on an offense that was crying out for a consistent tight end across the middle and in the red zone.
Thomas is now a little further down the pecking order following the additions of Dan Arnold and Tommy Tremble. Although it remains to be seen just how much the rookie out of Notre Dame is going to factor in the passing game.
Matt Rhule praised Thomas for his complete shift in application this offseason. One of the few players who’s still around after such comments.
With so many options available to the Panthers elsewhere – combined with the new arrivals at the position – Thomas might get more space than ever providing he can create separation.
Taking advantage of early chances is going to be key for the Indiana product. A slow start would put pay to his chances of more involvement and considering he’s in the final year of his deal, the prospect of a longer-term stay would be bleak.
Thomas will get a chance or two. And an increased sense of urgency could make all the difference.
