Jaylon Smith was released by the Dallas Cowboys late on Tuesday evening, and the Carolina Panthers should be contacting the linebacker straight away.

In a surprising move, the relationship between the Dallas Cowboys and Jaylon Smith came to an abrupt end following the team’s game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 4. Those in power within the organization felt the time was right to move on from the talented linebacker, which should put most of the NFL on red alert.

Although Smith hasn’t seen much action in 2021 after the Cowboys took Penn State‘s Micah Parsons in the draft, his phone should be blowing off the hook this morning. If the Panthers had any sense at all, they would be one of those looking to make an offer.

Phil Snow’s defense got exposed to a certain degree in Dallas during their first loss of the season. Certain position groups are something of real concern, so signing a player of Smith’s caliber would be a smart move to keep the recently generated momentum going in the right direction.

With this in mind, here are four reasons why Carolina should be making Smith a top priority in the coming days.

Carolina Panthers need better depth at LB

The Panthers have some top weapons on defense, which has led to some outstanding performances this season. However, they could still use some additional depth within their linebacker corps in pursuit of entering the playoff picture.

Jaylon Smith would change all that in an instant. He can operate either on the interior or as an outside linebacker should the opportunity arise and versatility is clearly something high on Carolina’s agenda when looking at new recruits.

It will be interesting to see where Smith ends up, but the Panthers should do their due diligence and make an inquiry, at the very least.
