Injury to Carolina Panthers OLB Shaq Thompson

Another potential factor the Carolina Panthers should factor is the injury to Shaq Thompson. According to Joseph Person of The Athletic, the former first-round pick is currently week to week with a foot problem and it remains to be seen just what the team is going to do in his absence.

Carolina does have Frankie Luvu to fill the void, who has impressed in a rotational role this season after making a hugely positive impact throughout training camp. But whether he can replicate Thompson’s outstanding production in 2021 so far is another matter.

This seems like an opportunity at just the right time where the Panthers are concerned. Jaylon Smith is experienced, has one Pro Bowl selection to his name, and is athletic enough to slot in and make an instant contribution.

It would also allow Carolina to take their time with Thompson and avoid further complications as the campaign goes on, depending on the severity of the injury.

Just why the Dallas Cowboys just released Smith entirely is anybody’s guess. But one suspects it could be something to do with his playing time through the first four games.

If it’s only that and nothing else, then the Panthers would be wise to throw their hat into the ring and see if they get lucky.
