Which teams should be picking up the phone and calling former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton?

Things should be heating up for former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and a potential new home in the not-too-distant future. According to Ian Rappaport of the NFL Network, the signal-caller has now chosen to get the COVID-19 vaccine after months of refusal, meaning he could sign for another organization with relatively little in the way of complications.

This comes after Newton‘s 2020 campaign was significantly derailed by contracting the virus and the 2015 NFL MVP got it again during training camp, which allowed the New England Patriots to get a closer look at rookie Mac Jones with more snaps.

Obviously, this eventually led to Newton’s shock release. Although one could argue he was on borrowed time anyway considering the Patriots selected Jones at No. 15 overall.

What comes next for Newton has yet to be determined. But here are four teams that should be picking up the phone and calling the Heisman Trophy winner and former No. 1 overall selection.

Pittsburgh Steelers should sign Cam Newton

Ben Roethlisberger is clearly on his last legs after a glittering career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His play has been subpar for the most part in 2021 and if things continue in the same fashion, head coach Mike Tomlin could be forced to make a very difficult and heartbreaking choice regarding the signal-caller’s status as the team’s undisputed No. 1.

It doesn’t appear likely that either Mason Rudolph or Dwayne Haskins can step in and fill the void long term. At least not judging by what we’ve seen from the duo throughout their respective careers.

Bringing Cam Newton on board would be a gamble and much would depend on whether he’s willing to be a backup initially. But it’s hard to look at Pittsburgh’s situation at quarterback and not think the Auburn product wouldn’t help in some capacity.
