Pro Football Focus revealed a potential trade before the 2021 deadline to solve the Carolina Panthers protection problems this season.

With the trade deadline fast approaching, teams across the league are trying to work out what more might be needed to propel them over the second half of the campaign. The Carolina Panthers have already been extremely active in the market since the appointment of Scott Fitterer, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the general manager pull another rabbit out of the hat.

One area where needs some significant reinforcements is the offensive line. The group has been a disappointment through the first six games, which is something almost everyone expected considering the personnel available and the additions made during the offseason.

This is having some big-time ramifications on the offense and quarterback Sam Darnold, in particular. This is not a player that makes smart decisions under pressure and although head coach Matt Rhule is keen to adopt a run-first mentality, that’s easier said than done without the services of All-Pro Christian McCaffrey.

Simply put, unless the Panthers improve their options in this critical area of the field, they’ll only get so far. The line gave up four sacks against the Minnesota Vikings to take their tally to 18 on the season, with only Ryan Tannehill of the Tennessee Titans brought down more so far.

This is a complication Carolina brought on themselves. And the organization might be stuck with what they have until next spring.

However, a recent scenario put forward brings a significant amount of intrigue.

Carolina Panthers could acquire LT help at the trade deadline.

One potential move was flaunted by Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus, who named the Panthers as a possible suitor for left tackle Cam Robinson if the Jacksonville Jaguars decide to cut their losses before the 2021 deadline.

The writer added that a deal might be agreed at a cost of two fifth-round picks in 2022 and 2023, which is certainly something to debate, at the very least.

"“The move could make sense in the long term as well if the Carolina Panthers do want to retain Cam Robinson. With Taylor Moton being a top-five paid right tackle, the Panthers could balance that out by signing Robinson to a mid-tier deal at left tackle. Christensen could continue to get work at guard and be another valuable asset as a lineman who can kick outside to right tackle if needed.”"

Robinson has been solid if not spectacular this season. He has yet to give up a sack and conceded three penalties from 381 snaps, which probably dictates he’d be an upgrade on current No. 1 left tackle, Cam Erving.

This would be another “win-now” move from the Panthers. Robinson is out of contract in 2022 and considering how many other players on the roster need paying, this might be a short-term arrangement if it came to fruition.

There is also compensation to consider.

The Panthers don’t have a Day 2 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft after giving up their second-rounder to the New York Jets for Darnold and the Jaguars possess their third-round pick as part of the C.J. Henderson trade recently.

Considering how important it is from Fitterer’s standpoint to build through the draft, this might not be something he’s considering even though they’d get a compensatory pick in return if Robinson bolted in free agency.

It is unlikely, especially given the capital Carolina’s given up in recent months to try and strengthen. But if Fitterer has taught us anything during his tenure so far, he will be “in on every deal”.
