Stephon Gilmore gets a debut INT for the Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers could finally activate Stephon Gilmore from the physically unable to perform list this week after deciding to give him some extra time to get up to speed in practice. The All-Pro cornerback is working his way back from a torn quad, but it would be a surprise if he didn’t play some part at the Atlanta Falcons.
To say Gilmore’s potential debut comes at a good time would be a huge understatement.
Carolina is on the field far too much on defense. So the more bodies they have to assist, the better their chances will be.
Keeping the Falcons’ offense quiet is no small feat. Matt Ryan is enjoying a recent renaissance and weapons such as Kyle Pitts, Calvin Ridley, and Russell Gage can break off big plays at will if afforded enough space.
This will be a stern test for the Panthers’ secondary, who have clearly missed Jaycee Horn since he went down with a broken foot. Gilmore could be on a snap count if he does take the field, but his ability to lock down the best wide receivers in the business is a significant asset for defensive coordinator Phil Snow to utilize.
Gilmore needs to prove he’s still elite. Getting a debut interception for the Panthers would be a good place to start his homecoming from the New England Patriots.
