Ameer Abdullah – Carolina Panthers RB

If Ameer Abdullah flashed with almost no preparation time last weekend at the New York Giants, then he really announced himself with the Carolina Panthers in Week 8. The running back provided a dual-threat presence in the backfield that’s been sorely missed since Christian McCaffrey went down, with the second-round pick making the most of almost every touch that came his way.

Abdullah demonstrated his outstanding burst behind a strong offensive line who made things very easy for whoever was carrying the football. Not only this, but the player became a solid security blanket for Sam Darnold when things weren’t developing downfield as expected in the passing game.

Again, this looks to be a nice bit of business for the Panthers. Abdullah was snapped up quickly following his departure from the Minnesota Vikings and based on what we’ve seen so far, he can help for the remaining games this season and possibly beyond.

The former Nebraska stud finished the game with 31 rushing yards from eight carries, in addition to three receptions for a further 35 yards. Abdullah has staked a strong claim for increased playing time until McCaffrey returns, but there is just no telling when that’s going to be right now.

Carolina going back to basics and establishing the run is benefitting everybody. It also helps when multiple players such as Abdullah, Royce Freeman, and Chuba Hubbard can contribute when called upon.
