6 first-round targets for the Carolina Panthers in the 2022 NFL Draft
By Dean Jones
Ikem Ekwonu – OL (NC State)
This would be a hugely popular selection in more ways than one. Ikem Ekwonu is no stranger to the Carolina Panthers’ fanbase as a North Carolina State standout and the physical specimen has all the intangibles needed to become a real force once he gets to the NFL.
Ekwonu is a shifter of men at the left tackle position. His ability to dominate in the run game is nothing short of phenomenal and he also possesses the sort of solid base that makes it incredibly difficult for opposing pass-rushers to shift.
There is some debate as to whether Ekwonu will be a tackle or a guard in the pros. But the Panthers cannot overthink this and get too cute as they have done with Brady Christensen.
Besides, if Ekwonu’s production over the last three years as a blindside force doesn’t warrant an opportunity to do the same if drafted by the Panthers, nothing will.
If there was one doubt about Ekwonu’s game, it’s getting the prospect to understand that not every block has to be a pancake. That simply won’t fly against bigger, faster defensive linemen in the NFL.
Timing is another potential problem that needs eradicating from his game. But this can be coached out of Ekwonu – who has some imposing physical attributes that Carolina desperately needs on their offensive line.
