Russell Wilson
The Carolina Panthers might not have the option of carrying an inexperienced rookie during a crucial third year under head coach Matt Rhule. This was supposed to be the time we saw real progress from the organization, but the constant uncertainty and poor decision-making when it comes to quarterbacks are costing them.
Sam Darnold is what he is. The Panthers felt it was a good gamble to take at the time, even if it has blown up in their face.
Go big or go home might be the only option to save Rhule and team owner David Tepper from some severe criticism. And general manager Scott Fitterer might want to make a call to his former employers to inquire about the availability of Russell Wilson.
There was plenty of speculation surrounding Wilson’s future with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason. Although this didn’t amount to anything, that might not be the case in 2022 if the team fails to make the postseason yet again.
Taking on Wilson’s contract would be a major stumbling block. The former Wisconsin star is set to count a combined $77 million against the salary cap over the final two years of his deal, which makes it difficult for the Panthers to tie down other players who need to be paid.
Wilson is a significant upgrade on Darnold. And it’s also worth remembering that Fitterer was director of college scouting in Seattle when he saw something almost every other team did not.
