Cam Newton is a change of pace

This might be the most boring of reasons but at the same time may be the main reason for Cam Newton getting re-signed. When your starting pitcher doesn’t have it you bring in your All-Star reliever.

Sam Darnold has struggled, and that is putting it as nicely as I possibly can. Something had to change as I mentioned when speaking of the team’s keys to victory against the Arizona Cardinals and the former MVP is most certainly a change.

You cannot possibly get more opposite from Darnold than Newton.

Darnold is a pure pocket passer that thrives when no one is within shouting distance and he can plant his feet. Whereas Newton has always been a scrambler and takes that pressure head-on with a smile on his face all the while.

That is without even mentioning the fact that Newton has always been a player that opposing linebackers tend to shy away from when he gets to full speed. And for good reason.

With the coaching staff having Darnold run more than he ever has in his career so far this season, it’s almost like the team wanted a player like Newton all along. They tried, and failed, to make the USC stud into one.

With the type of physicality that Newton brings to the game under center, it will hopefully open up whatever playbook Joe Brady has apparently been hiding. Injecting some excitement into an offense that has been boring, to put it mildly.

Darnold is a player that opposing teams put pressure on and Newton is a player that puts pressure on opposing teams. It’s as simple as that.

The Carolina Panthers’ coaching staff will also get a much-needed trial run with a player in P.J. Walker that is essentially Newton light in every sense of the word. In fact, the staff has already shown a willingness to bring in the former Temple star to change things up late in a game.

This lends even more credence to this being the right, and only, call the front office should have made. The Panthers needed a spark and they just might have hit lightning.
