5 reasons bringing Cam Newton back was the right call

Cam Newton improves optics
This is the reason that no one really wants to talk about but it’s a reason nonetheless.
Optics are very important for both longevity and profitability in any business and the NFL at its core is exactly this and nothing more.
The Carolina Panthers were the hottest commodity in the league after three straight wins to start the season. There was an enormous amount of hype from all corners of the media and fanbase. But those emotions are fickle and the team found itself at one of the lowest points in its young history after four straight losses and five defeats in their last six.
Losses do not equal ticket sales and neither does a quarterback that doesn’t sell jerseys.
Owner David Tepper saw this problem and thought of a way to fix it. Bring in the most recognizable figure in the franchise’s history, a player every fan would pay to see one last time. And re-signing Cam Newton worked masterfully.
Look around at all the articles just like this one or listen to any sportscast and there will be a mention of this move somewhere. The Panthers are back in the limelight and for a good reason for once.
Even if this return for Newton ends up blowing up in the organization’s face like a great many have of late, this week of excitement and profitability will do wonders to distract from the obvious issues that have plagued them for the last two years.
It gives the decision-makers a bit of breathing room.
No one can deny that this made the Panthers smell like roses, at least for a day. That may be enough to keep the fans around for just a bit longer as nostalgia sells and Newton has it in droves.
