Terrible QB play and depth

The Carolina Panthers quarterback situation is the worst it’s been in quite some time.

Carolina traded for Sam Darnold this offseason to hopefully be the franchise quarterback for years to come. Despite starting the season 3-0, his play has regressed every week since, including being benched for his poor play in a 25-3 loss to the New York Giants.

Earlier this week, Darnold was placed on injured reserve after dealing with injuries the past few weeks, including a concussion and a shoulder injury that occurred in last week’s loss against the New England Patriots.

Darnold is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, which left the starting spot to P.J. Walker. The former XFL quarterback hasn’t played much this season, only appearing in two games and completing three-of-15 passes for 33 yards.

Last season, he led the Panthers to a 20-0 victory over the Detroit Lions, throwing for 258 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Walker exhibits confidence on the field but his consistency remains unproven with his inexperience at the NFL level.

Prior to signing Cam Newton, the Panthers also acquired veteran Matt Barkley, who has played in a reserve role for most of his career.

At 4-5 and the team sliding fast, combined with all these factors, it’s not a shock as to why the Panthers decided to contact Newton.

The former NFL MVP had his fair share of struggles last season with the New England Patriots. But his confidence and swagger can bring a fresh sense of life to the Panthers’ offense.
