Bill Belichick offered some thoughts on what turned out to be a sensational return for Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in Week 10.

When Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule called Bill Belichick for his perception of Cam Newton and what he could potentially offer last week, the report was glowing.

Although the New England Patriots released the signal-caller in favor of rookie Mac Jones – which seems to be working out well – Belichick still holds Newton in the highest regard and has always been enormously complimentary of the quarterback despite taking a business decision before the campaign got underway.

Newton was a breath of fresh air on his second formal debut for the Panthers. He brought a new lease of life to the organization that was evident from the fans to the players, contributing two touchdowns in as many plays to open the contest at the Arizona Cardinals.

Carolina played it safe with Newton and used him on a handful of occasions. He had almost no time to learn the playbook, so it was almost unbelievable he was active at all.

The former first-round pick’s influence was also evident on the sidelines. Newton provided a leadership element that was sorely lacking with Sam Darnold and teammates were keenly listening to anything he had to say away from the gridiron.

The culture has shifted.

And it took almost no time at all.

Bill Belichick “absolutely” delighted for Cam Newton.

When Belichick was asked by The Greg Hill Show if he was happy for Newton following New England’s emphatic 45-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns, the coach’s comments were a further indicator of the esteem in which he holds his old quarterback.

"“Yeah, absolutely. It was great when they signed him. Sounds like he had a great day yesterday. So, always happy for Cam. Appreciate everything he did. He was a wonderful guy to coach and be around.”"

Had Newton not contracted COVID-19 and allowed Jones to take first-team reps in training camp for five days, things might have been different.

Instead, the Alabama product is thriving on the Patriots and Newton is back where he belongs.

What’s important for Newton and the Panthers is building off this positivity. It’s a big upcoming week for the signal-caller, who will have a lot on his plate getting up to speed with a view to starting in Week 11 at home against the Washington Football Team and his old coach Ron Rivera.

The atmosphere in Bank of America Stadium next Sunday is going to be incredible. When Newton gets announced and comes flying out of the tunnel, the level of noise will be enough to send chills down the spine.

Belichick and Newton developed a strong rapport despite many believing they wouldn’t co-exist.

Although the Boston media laid every criticism his way, it’s clear Belichick had and still has a deep respect and admiration for the way Newton goes about his business.

Judging by the way Jones is progressing, going with the first-year-pro was the right call. But if Newton leads Carolina to the postseason, this situation that’s come full-circle ends up being a win-win for all parties involved.
