4 encouraging signs from Cam Newton’s first start since returning

There were plenty of questions surrounding Cam Newton during his final few games with the New England Patriots. Perhaps nothing more than the quarterback’s arm strength and accuracy.

This is nothing new for Newton, who’s had these doubts surface throughout his time in the league. However, any regression over his second stint as part of the Carolina Panthers could see his career come to an abrupt end.

Thankfully, this didn’t come to fruition.

Newton was accurate more often than not when it came to distribution and showed there is still life in his arm yet with a few lasers that drew widespread adulation from those in attendance.

Two throws, in particular, stood out. There was the cannon to Tommy Tremble for a big gain and the gorgeous ball delivered into the hands of Christian McCaffrey for a touchdown.

Again, the sample size in terms of the scheme is small. Once Newton gets more responsibility with a full playbook from Joe Brady, we’ll find out more about what the player could potentially bring to the Carolina Panthers over the next six games and possibly beyond.

Newton kept his eyes downfield, recognized pressure, and made big throws when it mattered. Although there were one or two disappointing efforts, it was never going to be perfect and it’s hard to look at his production in this particular region and not be encouraged.
