Cam Newton will only get better

It’s a lot to ask of any player to step right in and completely change a team’s fortunes. Even more so at the quarterback position.

In Cam Newton’s case, these expectations increased an untold amount considering how successful the signal-caller was during his first stint with the Carolina Panthers.

However, the fact remains that Newton had to cope with fan excitement, be a leader, learn a completely new system with Joe Brady, and produce the goods when it mattered most.

It was a basic scheme implemented, indicating Newton isn’t quite where he needs to be just yet after one week of full practice. But the small sample size indicated that the player will only get better between now and the end of the campaign.

Newton was efficient with the football, created yards on the ground, and communicated well with his teammates. Traits that have been sorely lacking with Sam Darnold under center before he went to the reserve/injured list.

It’s going to be another busy week for Newton ahead of Carolina’s game at the Miami Dolphins, which is essentially an elimination one just before their bye week.

Gradual progression is all anybody can ask. Newton holds himself to high standards and is desperate to make a real go of things – but we probably won’t see his best until after the bye at home to the Atlanta Falcons.
