5 Carolina Panthers fighting for their futures after the bye week
By Dean Jones
A.J. Bouye – Carolina Panthers CB
Considering the strength within the Carolina Panthers cornerback unit, it’s been a real surprise they’ve been so unproductive in recent weeks. Both Terry McLaurin and Jaylen Waddle torched the secondary leading up to their bye, which is a problem that needs to be rectified at the earliest possible opportunity.
The Panthers can ill-afford more lapses in concentration against some elite passing attacks down the stretch. Although the prospect of All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore seeing increased reps moving forward will help enormously.
Some within the depth chart need to finish the campaign on a high to enhance their chances of a role in 2022. A.J. Bouye falls into this category and the Pro Bowler might be on the outside looking in when it’s all said and done.
The veteran has performed well overall this season. Bouye has given up 32 receptions from 39 balls thrown his way en route to a creditable 65.1 grade from Pro Football Focus, with his assistance against the run also catching the eye on occasions.
That being said, Gilmore and Donte Jackson could need paying, so this situation regarding Bouye remains a precarious one.
Releasing Bouye ahead of time would cost the Panthers around $1.21 million in dead-cap, which represents a saving of $3.5 million. A tempting offer unless the former Central Florida standout leaves no doubt regarding his status next season.
