Carolina Panthers Pick No. 204

Mike Strachan – WR

  • Original 2021 pick: Shi Smith – WR

We don’t have the first clue about what Shi Smith can bring to the pros. The wide receiver was a standout at South Carolina in college and came into the Carolina Panthers with an intriguing set of skills, which haven’t been used much despite the lack of reliability from some in the passing game.

Smith was active at the Miami Dolphins as head coach Matt Rhule felt his speed could be something to assist their cause. But he wasn’t targeted as the Panthers couldn’t get anything going throughout one of their most disappointing performances of the season.

There might be a chance Smith becomes a larger contributor after the bye and in the years to come. However, nobody is too sure at this moment and Mike Strachan has already proven to a certain extent there could be a fine career in his future based on the wideout’s initial efforts with the Indianapolis Colts.

Carolina had their eye on Strachan during the evaluation process, holding a virtual meeting with the prospect before opting to go in a different direction. A decision they might like to have back considering how well his athleticism and size have settled at the next level.

The 6-foot-5 presence hasn’t been used much since the opening two weeks of the season. But the upside is there for all to see despite Strachan’s limited playing time.
