5 Carolina Panthers who could be released ahead of time in 2022
By Dean Jones
Stantley Thomas-Oliver III – Carolina Panthers CB
- Dead-cap figure: $51,586
- Cap savings: $869,207
Much like the situation with Sam Franklin, there was plenty to like about Stantley Thomas Oliver’s production in Year 1 of his professional career. The former seventh-round pick was brought on gradually by the Carolina Panthers before getting reps during the second half of the campaign once he’d fully adjusted to the next level.
Outside of getting schooled by Justin Jefferson at the Minnesota Vikings, Thomas-Oliver did well overall. But the Panthers made strengthening their cornerback options a huge priority both during the offseason and before the trade deadline to see the Florida International product tumble down the depth chart.
Thomas-Oliver was seldom seen on the defensive rotation this season, although his special teams’ production remained encouraging. To make matters worse, the cornerback went to the reserve/injured list to cut his campaign short.
As stated previously, cornerback is probably the strongest area on the Panthers providing either Stephon Gilmore or Donte Jackson sign new deals.
This would be a big surprise considering the minimal savings involved. But releasing Thomas-Oliver ahead of time cannot be ruled out entirely – even though it would be nice to see how the player develops entering his third season in the NFL.
