Brandon Zylstra – Carolina Panthers WR
There might not be a more dependable pass-catcher on the Carolina Panthers right now. Brandon Zylstra hasn’t been given much in the way of targets, but the wideout has made almost every ball thrown his way count during his time on the field.
Considering the complications others in the wide receiver room are suffering from, this should not go overlooked by Carolina’s coaching staff.
Zylstra’s smooth route-running and reliability could be key factors following the bye week as quarterback Cam Newton further familiarizes himself with the weapons at his disposal. There might also be additional targets coming his way now that Christian McCaffrey is on season-ending injured/reserve with an ankle complication.
The former CFL star has brought in 12 of 14 targets in 2021 for 188 receiving yards and one touchdown. He leads the Panthers in passer rating when targeted with 142.6 and also possesses an encouraging 69.7 grade from Pro Football Focus.
Carolina has the obvious temptation to give rookie duo Terrace Marshall Jr. and Shi Smith some extra responsibilities at this stage of their development. However, Zylstra has earned the right to stake his own claim down the stretch.
Zylstra is also a key contributor on special teams, which only enhances his overall influence on the roster that doesn’t get noticed all that much.
