5 leading candidates if the Panthers cut ties with head coach Matt Rhule
By Dean Jones
Brian Daboll
The connection between the Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills is strong. Former defensive coordinator Sean McDermott is now a head coach on the AFC East team, bringing a wealth of ex-players over to his new home to assist his cause.
Perhaps something could happen to go the other way this offseason if the Panthers opt to cut the Matt Rhule experiment short.
Brian Daboll seems like a sure-thing to earn a promotion from somebody this offseason. He comes from the Alabama coaching tree after spending one season under Nick Saban and is largely responsible for turning quarterback Josh Allen from a raw prospect into an NFL MVP candidate in no time at all.
It was a little surprising to see Daboll not get one of the top jobs available last offseason.
But make no mistake, that will not be the case this time around.
Daboll is an offensive guru that is exactly what the Panthers need right now. It’s evident that Carolina’s defense has a bright future and even if they’d had a competent offense in 2021, playoff football wouldn’t be far behind.
He has a wealth of NFL and college experience. Daboll has paid his dues and is more than deserving of real head coaching consideration in the coming weeks once firings begin across the league on “Black Monday”.
