Although there is nothing particularly wrong with the Carolina Panthers from a defensive standpoint compared to the offense, taking a defensive-minded head coach cannot be ruled out entirely if they want to make a drastic change this offseason.

There are plenty of worthy candidates if the Panthers went in this direction. Even if letting Matt Rhule leave after just two years would be something of a precedent-setter across the league after he originally signed a seven-year, $60 million deal.

Someone like Matt Eberflus comes into the equation in this scenario. He’s done absolute wonders as defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts in recent years and seems more than ready for the next step.

Eberflus has a consistent record of impressive results with the Colts. They have been among the league leaders in multiple statistical categories since he assumed command of the defense and his knowledge of such a fantastic draft process within the organization is going to be of significant use somewhere else.

Relieving Rhule of his duties before he’s had the chance to make strides in Year 3 – which is normally when his process gains substantial progress – would be a massive call to make. But Tepper didn’t acquire his vast wealth by waiting for things to happen if they aren’t developing as expected.
