4 pros and cons to the Carolina Panthers drafting Kenny Pickett in 2022
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers have other needs and no Day 2 pick
It’s all well and good salivating at the next promising quarterback prospect. But until the Carolina Panthers fix their offensive line, the same problems will constantly emerge.
And as the last two years have shown, no signal-caller can operate effectively in this sort of environment.
The Panthers have ignored their protection for what seems like an age. However, games are won and lost in the trenches and Carolina’s failure to provide stability outside of Taylor Moton has been their undoing on countless occasions.
Kenny Pickett is a nice idea and there’s every chance he can become a productive pro based on what we’ve seen this season.
But the fact Carolina doesn’t have a Day 2 pick this year following trades for Sam Darnold and C.J. Henderson only heightens the need to find a franchise left tackle from a fantastic class at the top end.
Obviously, a good quarterback is a necessity for any team looking to contend.
Pickett has all the talent in the world to make a real go of things at the next level providing there isn’t too much on his shoulders initially. But time is a luxury this coaching staff might not have if things continue to regress in the coming weeks.
The quarterback’s sensational ACC Championship game performance strengthened his first-round claims. Whether it did enough to alter Carolina’s draft mindset this spring is another matter.
