4 long-term offensive coordinator candidates for the Carolina Panthers
By Dean Jones
Bill O’Brien
This is a little ambitious and something that Bill O’Brien might not entertain.
But nothing ventured, nothing gained right?
O’Brien’s coaching prowess went overlooked throughout his time with the Houston Texans. This is down in no small part to some bizarre personnel decisions from the head coach, who also played the role of general manager.
Something he was clearly not ready for.
That being said, O’Brien is a gifted offensive mind. This has been further reflected throughout the season as offensive coordinator of the Alabama Crimson Tide, who hung 41 on a Georgia Bulldogs defense that was giving up just six points per game on average.
Of course, the prospect of O’Brien swapping one coordinator position for another is highly unlikely. Working for a young coach might also not be in his mindset at this stage of his career.
If this was a head coaching vacancy, it would be different.
But the Panthers might just give Matt Rhule one more season to figure things out before blowing things up entirely.
O’Brien has salvaged his reputation under Nick Saban, who is among the greatest coaches ever seen in college football. Rhule’s allure isn’t nearly as accomplished, so this does appear to be a non-starter from the outside looking in.
